Day 46 (15.02.10) – My Niece. An Artist. Our Pride.

After viewing the artworks that my 11 year old niece, Alex (at our recent trip to visit them in Canada) produced in her (very) young life, I knew that it won’t be long before other people recognise her talent. I just didn’t realise it will be this soon!

At 11 years of age, my niece, Alexandrea (Alex) delos Reyes participated in her first Art Exhibit called “Art of All Sorts” (currently running till 18 February at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC). This art exhibit was organised to raise funds for the statue of Emily Carr (One of Canada’s most respected and prominent artists).

The talent of this beautiful child is beyond belief. Above are 4 of the 5 paintings that Alex has on exhibit. As you can see, 2 have red dots. Sold on the first few days of the Exhibit!

The Exhibit organiser, Bonny (pictured above) saw some of Alex’s artworks prominently displayed (with pride, of course!) at my brother and sister-in-law’s Crepes n Cream shop in Victoria, BC and as they say, the rest is history.

We are proud to say that Alex is the youngest artist to exhibit at this event. The second youngest one is 20 years old.

Having a young artist exhibiting for the first itme generated quite a media sensation in Victoria, BC. Here is Alex being interviewed by the local TV station in the province. Alex was also interviewed by several newspapers in their area.

To my dearest brother, Ricky, my lovely SIL, Maria:

I share your pride and joy in having the talent of your gorgeous daughter, my sweet niece, Alex recognised by others. I know you didn’t need that public recognition to be proud of our little star but it can’t be helped. Alex’s talent is too good to go unnoticed! :-)

I love it that Alex is taking this amazing experience (the Art Exhibit, the media attention and such) in her normal, laid back stride. Borrowing the words of Alex’s art teacher, I also congratulate you for raising such an extraordinary daughter with such an extraordinary talent:

Great news to hear of the sold painting. This is a wonderful contribution to the Emily Carr statue that will be in Victoria forever! I think that Alex was so mature about handling all of the attention and was gracious at the opening. The girls had a fabulous time and it was good for them to be a part of this important event.

I watched her on the T.V. that evening and Alex was amazing! So outside of what could have been an ego involved moment, she transcended all of that and was pure and definite in her response to the questions . She was marvelous in her clear answers as to how important giving towards the statue was. I must admit I was moist around the eyes!

So congrats to Alex and also to the both of you , for raising such an extraordinary daughter.

We love you, our dear Alex. We look forawrd to seeing you again soon.
